The combined releases of Cursed City and the new Soulblight Gravelords faction guaranteed I would make a vampire centric army for AoS 3.0. So after devouring the new rules and Narrative Play section of the Core Book. I put together a Soulblight Gravelords Path to Glory Roster based on what I had to hand with one additional purchase, a Vampire Lord to be my Warlord.
The only fudging I’ve had to do was adding 10 Chainrasp Horde models to fill out the zombies from Cursed City to make a minimum sized unit of Deadwalker Zombies. Fudging that I’ll rectify when I have some spare cash. Thankfully the person I usually play with allowed me the substitution. The other key thing that made this list possible was the separating of Radukar’s Court into separate units thanks for the AoS 3.0 Soulblight Gravelords Errata.
No longer being bound by the old Pitched Battle profile has made the Cursed City models a lot more useful for Soulblight Gravelords players. In particular for Path to Glory armies where points are tight. It also frees the Kosargi Nightguard and Vyrkos Blood-born up for Reinforcement under the 3.0 rules which is great. Basically, what was a middling list choice has become a range of compelling options all tied into a meaty webstore only purchase. It also makes one of the new sub factions the Vyrkos Dynasty, a lot more versatile. WIN! WIN!
Finally to fill out the line up I decided on adding Kin of the Wolf as my Vampire Lord’s Command Trait,
Kin of the Wolf: Letting out a lupine howl, this general summons packs of undead wolves to the field.
Death Battletome: Soulblight Gravelords, Games Workshop: 2021
Once per battle, at the end of your movement phase, you can say that this general will summon a pack of Dire Wolves to the battlefield. If you do so, you can add 1 unit of up to 5 DIRE WOLVES to your army. Set up that unit wholly within 9″ of this general and more than 9″ from all enemy units.
A half sized unit of Dire Wolves isn’t a lot but in the short term it gives my warband a much needed additional unit. In the long term they should be useful for running interference.
Thankfully I still had a random box of 5 Fenrisian Wolves from when Games Workshop did that weird blind box offer last year. All they needed was to be put on bigger bases. They will also stand out a bit more on the battlefield because they will look different to the standard Dire Wolf models. (Which I will get eventually) In the burgeoning lore for my Warband these are my Warlord’s personal hounds.
It is also worth noting that the Dire Wolves paint scheme from the Soulblight Gravelords Battletome is super quick and easy to do. With amazing results.
That’s the boring list stuff out of the way. Let’s talk about the key element to Path to Glory, narrative!
I want to commend the AoS rules team for giving us a near perfect narrative campaign system that will suit everyone. Even players not actively engaging in it. At its core is the developing story of your Warband. Giving you simple ways to make them uniquely yours as you track their victories and defeats. Causing units to grow and diminish in power and ability. While you gradually gain access to more resources in the process.
It shares many similarities with the equally superb Crusade system for 40K but has that distinct AoS spin and in my opinion a greater focus on individuality. Also like Crusade it is designed with expansion in mind. There will be Path to Glory content in new Battletomes along with fully fledged campaign packs. It is going to be epic seeing this warband grow and change over time.
On the Roster sheet and in the Path to Glory Diary (review coming soon!) the are prompts to name everything associated with your Warband. Also some extra details like populations and who reigns over your various territories. This has lead me to already start crafting an in-depth narrative for my Soulblight Gravelords. Despite only playing one game so far.
It is more than new edition excitement, it is great set of up front and easy to grasp tools for storytelling. Tools that work with how Age of Sigmar is played. It uses points to keep things balanced and does away with the weird half unit sizes of 2nd edition’s Path to Glory system. Hopefully it will bring a lot more people into narrative play and by extension custom armies. It is already working its magic on me as I start thinking up kitbashing ideas and how to make my Soulblight Gravelords more unique.
